About this set: 1978 was the Phillies third consecutive division title. The Phillies lost the NL Series to the Dodgers, three games to one, primarily due to a weak offensive showing, particularly in Tommy John's Game two shutout. Greg Luzinksi was the offensive MVP for the Phillies in 1978, as Schmidt struggled at the plate both in getting on base and in producing extra-base hits. Steve Carlton remained the team's ace, with a 2.84 ERA which does is more characteristic of his performance than his 16-13 record. Carlton pitched twelve complete games, including there shutouts. He also hit .291 at the plate during the year, helping out his effort when he was on the mound. Ron Reed served as the closer for the Phils. A great overall team.
