Despite the fact that this set is one year older than Play Ball's first production and not colorful like the 1941 Play Ball issue, this set is regarded as the toughest of the bunch. Just check your PSA Population numbers and it will become very clear, the 1940 Play Ball's are a tough group. The 240-card set features some great cards like the Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Ted Williams (his second card), and a post-playing days card of Joe Jackson. How about the number one card in the set? It features the legendary Yankee Joe DiMaggio. Not a bad selection. As far as condition obstacles are concerned, this set is subject to toning along the edges and borders. Too much toning can be a real eyesore and downgrade the card. In addition to the star cards mentioned above, the set also contains great cards of retired Hall of Famers like Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. This is a wonderful set for the collector who needs a major challenge and it provides a nice balance of current stars and retired legends.
