The 1951 Topps “Connie Mack All-Stars” set consists of 11 die-cut cards, each measuring 2-1/16” by 5-1/4” and each representing a Cooperstown inductee: Grover Cleveland Alexander, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins, Jimmy Collins, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, Connie Mack, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker and Honus Wagner. Every card in this Topps offering – one of the company’s first such undertakings - features a black-and-white action player photograph printed on a red background; a colored name plate was printed underneath with the athlete’s full name, nickname, team affiliation, position, years active in the league, a facsimile signature and the identifier “Connie Mack’s All-Time All-Star Team.” The back carries a brief biography and folding instructions. This set was issued along with the Topps “Major League All-Stars” series, and designed so that each card could be folded to allow the player to “stand.” As a result, high-grade examples of any card remain scarce, with Ruth and Gehrig demanding the highest returns.
