About this set: The 1963 Topps Football set is unique in that the majority of player cards have an obvious color variation. 116 cards in a 170 card set to be exact! A complete set with all variations would consist of 287 cards (some nearly impossible to find!). There is no other set in the card world like it! The color variations are often called 'Purple Sky' color variations (additional variation of #102 Frank Youso with 3 color lines on left knee). Variations are pictured on the left in the scans. Some show vivid contrast when seen side by side (49'ers among my favorites). Some are not easily recognized, yet all variations have one thing in common: In the sky and/or background areas the presence of magenta (red) benday dots in the color matrix seen under magnification. On most cards the resulting 'Purple Sky' is most easily recognized. Some do not exhibit a 'purple sky' but a difference is evident in the background such as Joe Schmidt and Leo Nomellini among others. The cards on the right side are the more common blue sky variety and are devoid of red dots in the indicated area, such as: blue sky, green background (and evidence of masking is can be seen on many).
