The 1958 Hires Root Beer Baseball set consists of 66 cards, each one measuring approximately 2-5/16" by 3-1/2", or 2-5/16" by 7" with tabs. The cards were issued detachable coupons and inserted with Hires Root Beer cartons. The perforated tabs, encouraging the purchaser to "Join the Hires Baseball Club Today," were typically removed. Finding a card with that advertisement tab in place is extremely difficult to find and thus are quite expensive. Each piece bears a colorized player likeness surrounded by a faux wood grain design that gives the appearance that one is viewing the athlete through a knot hole. His name, team and position are identified in a rectangle at the bottom border. Richie Ashburn (#10), Larry Doby (#17), Pee Wee Reese (#23), Willie Mays (#25), Bill Mazeroski (#36), Hank Aaron (#44), Don Drysdale (#55) and Ted Kluszewski (#67) anchor the set. Hires chose an unusual numbering system for its set, beginning with #10 and skipping #69.
