SET REVIEWS

1958 Topps Football The 1958 Topps Football Set: A Challenging 1950s Gridiron Issue
The 1958 Topps football set has always been a tough challenge for collectors of high-grade cards, suffering from centering and print problems throughout. Anchored by one of the most significant football cards in the hobby - the Jim Brown rookie - this 132-card set is full of Hall of Famers, including a key second-year card of Johnny Unitas. In the following piece, we break down the classic set. More...

1953-54 Parkhurst Hockey The 1953-54 Parkhurst Hockey Set: A Groundbreaking but Underrated Hockey Set
The 1953-54 Parkhurst hockey set remains of the most visually appealing card productions ever manufactured, in any sport. Not only are they considered beautiful, they are also condition-sensitive cards that often suffer from varying degrees of toning. Two HOF rookies, Jean Beliveau and Gump Worsley, appear in the set, which is chock full of stars. In the following article, we take a look at the great hockey set through the eyes of collectors. PSA SET REGISTRYSM SPOTLIGHT

Mr. Parkies - The Number One Current Finest 1955-56 Parkhurst Hockey Set
Parkhurst hockey cards from the 1950s are all extremely popular amongst collectors and they are, for the most part, equally as tough for a host of reasons. In 1955, Parkhurst took the difficulty to the next level by including a colored border along the bottom edge, an edge that reveals wear with the slightest touch. The set has many key cards of Hall of Famers like those of Maurice Richard, a tough #1 card of Harry Lumley and the anchor of the set - the Jacques Plante rookie. The 79-card set also includes a run of special cards to finish the set, showcasing players in action and cards that pay tribute to specific hockey venues. This year's winner has a very impressive 7.83 GPA in this highly-competitive category. Click here to view the 2010 winner for the Best Vintage Hockey Set of the Year.

PSA Q & A

Question: I have an autographed card that I would like to submit to PSA but I am debating between the Red label and Blue label service. What should I do?

Answer: This is a very good question and certainly not easy to answer because there are a lot of factors that come into play. For example, if the card is of little value or is in bad condition, the Blue label service seems to be a more appealing option. The reason for that is you still get the benefit of the holder, serial number, etc. but - if the autograph is relatively strong - you can still achieve a decent grade under the autograph grading service. In other words, if the card is a "2" but the autograph is an "8", the presentation is more appealing with the higher grade on the label.
