COLLECTOR'S CORNER
PSA Q & A Question: When someone refers to a bat surface being "planed," what does that mean?Answer: A planed surface may be found on some vintage bats, though it is fairly rare. Sometimes, this was done by a person at the bat factory so they could document the bat upon its return by the player (possibly after cracking it, etc.). They would plane the surface so they could write along the barrel in grease pencil. Other times, you can see bats with planed surfaces where players autographed the bat. The flatter surface simply made it easier to sign. Finally, and very rarely, you may see a planed surface where a player was altering the barrel for game or practice reasons. In these rare cases, there are rules that prevent players from altering bats in certain ways and any major form of barrel flattening would prevent the bat (if caught by an umpire) from being used in a game.
