PSA Q & A Question: Why doesn't PSA place a number grade on some 19th Century cabinet issues?Answer: PSA, at least at the current time, has decided not to place numerical grades on some cabinet issues. The reason behind it is that some of these issues are merely a mounted photo on a cardboard backing. In some cases, the cardboard backing varies quite a bit, even within the same issue. In addition, since eye appeal plays such a great role on these issues, it would seem unfair to downgrade one of these cards severely if the mounted photo is in nice condition (assuming the cardboard has noticeable flaws). Oftentimes, you will see cabinet cards that technically grade very poor but the photo itself is actually presentable.
