PSA SET REVIEW

1970-71 Topps Basketball Set The 1970-71 Topps Basketball Set: Tall Boys, Short Prints and Mr. Maravich
The 1970 Topps basketball set was the Tall Boy follow up to the very popular 1969 release. While this set doesn't quite have the rookie star power of its predecessor, it does contain one of the most popular basketball rookies of all time -- the Pete Maravich #123. The set also includes several Hall of Famers. Finally, the set begins with a string of league leaders and ends with a high-number run devoted to the playoffs. In the following article, we break down the popular basketball set. More...

PSA Q & A

Question: I am collecting autographed Baseball Hall of Fame Plaques and know there are some major rarities in the set, including some that are impossible to find signed for one reason or another. How scarce is a signed Babe Ruth plaque?

Answer: Autographed Baseball Hall of Fame Plaques are great collectibles and, as you mentioned, some are quite rare. Babe Ruth is one of them. While there is no way to be certain how many exist in total, only a handful of authentic examples have been discovered, with the last example selling for well in excess of $50,000 due to the rarity. The reason for the rarity is that there was a very small window for Ruth to sign them prior to his death in 1948. The ones that were signed are very desirable.

COLLECTORS SURVEY

In your opinion, which of the following items should be the most valuable Babe Ruth piece in the hobby?

  1. The bat (now autographed) Ruth used to hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium in 1923
  2. The jersey he wore during the alleged Called Shot in 1932 against the Cubs
  3. The highest graded example of the 1914 Baltimore News Minor League card
  4. The 1920 sale agreement that sent Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees
