PSA SET REVIEW

1948 Bowman Football The 1948 Bowman Football Set: Overcoming 60 Years of Overlooked Status
The 1948 Bowman football set does not get the attention that the colorful Leaf issue from the same year enjoys but this could be a blessing in disguise for many football card collectors. The set is absolutely filled with important rookie cards like those of Sammy Baugh and Bulldog Turner and some tough short prints. While slightly larger than the Leaf issue, the set is of a manageable size at 108 cards. In the following piece, collectors share their reasons for pursuing this often overlooked classic. More...

1901 E95 Phila. Caramel Ed Cicotte The Sweet Recollections of Erik Varon
Erik Varon, a collector who has been intrigued by the 1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel baseball set, decided to give back to the hobby by composing a new book about the very same subject in 2009. This book concentrates on the history behind these caramel cards, which have become increasingly popular over the past few years as evidenced by the stunning prices paid at auction for exceptional examples. We look inside Varon's work and his collection in the following article. More...

PSA SET REGISTRYSM SPOTLIGHT

seinbigd - The Number One Current Finest 1962 Post Cereal Football Set
While this issue is not exactly a mainstream set, it is one of the more difficult vintage football issues to assemble on the registry. Keep in mind that these cards were found on the backs of various cereal boxes and many of them have been poorly cut over the years, eliminating them from eligibility for a numerical grade from PSA. This particular set is not only complete, it carries with it an amazing set rating of 8.62! With 200 cards needed to complete the set, this achievement is put into even greater perspective. The set also includes a slew of very tough short prints and some very early cards of players like Mike Ditka and Fran Tarkenton. Click here to view.

PSA Q & A

Question: I have been collecting 1959 Fleer Three Stooges cards and have noticed a wide range in color on these cards. Does that impact the grade?

Answer: There is no doubt that eye-appeal will affect the grade when evaluating a card; however, if there is a wide variance within an issue and it is common, it will have much less of an impact. The 1959 Fleer Three Stooges issue is one where big variances in color, registration and border tone are very common. Since that is the case, you may see various PSA 8 Curly cards -- for example -- with slightly different appearances. That said, collectors should buy cards that they find attractive, regardless of the technical grade.
