PSA HOBBY SPOTLIGHT
PSA Q & A Question: I was thinking about building some sets on the PSA Set Registry and noticed that there are Basic set and Master set categories, with Master sets including variations and rarities while Basic sets contain mainly the basic cards only. What do most collectors do?Answer: This is a great question. It really depends on the set. Some classic sets have key rarities like the 1909-11 T206 set (which includes the Honus Wagner card) while others have variations like the 1958 Topps Yellow Letters or 1969 Topps White Letters. In cases like the ones above, most collectors seem to care about Master set since these rarities and variations are widely accepted and noteworthy. In some other sets, there are variations but there may not be much of a difference in value between them. In those cases, where the variations are not popular by mainstream standards or where the cards have very little difference in value, most collectors do not feel compelled to collect all the possible cards. It is important that you ask other hobbyists first before you decide to start building major sets. You want to make sure that your efforts in obtaining rarities and variations are appreciated by the majority of collectors.
