PSA SET REVIEW
PSA Q & A Question: What is the difference between grooving and scoring when it comes to game-used bats?Answer: Both are used to either enhance the grip on a bat or to create spin on the ball after contact. Players would use sharp objects such a jackknives to prepare their bats. Grooving is best described as carving that occurs in a straight line. The handle may be grooved, up and down; in order to enhance grip or the contact area of the barrel may have grooves to create spin on the ball. Scoring is different in that the carving resembles a criss-cross pattern, either along the handle or barrel. Even though the techniques are different, the purpose is the same. Players known to use these techniques include great hitters such as Hank Greenberg (scoring), Stan Musial (handle grooving) and Roberto Clemente (barrel grooving).
