PSA SET REVIEW

1949 Bowman Baseball Set Collecting the 1949 Bowman Baseball Set
The 1949 Bowman baseball set, the first Bowman issue to make use of color, is very collectible and for a number of reasons. It contains several key rookie cards like that of Duke Snider and Richie Ashburn. The set, at 240 cards, is feasible for most collectors and does not represent too daunting of a task. The set also contains some interesting variations to boot. In the following piece, some collectors share with us why this Bowman production is so appealing. More...

1938 Horrors of War Set A Historic Illustration: "Ronnie Paloger's 1938 Horrors of War Set"
The 1938 Horrors of War is one that is as graphic as it is controversial. The set depicts, with stunning realism, terrible moments from the field of battle and beyond. Ronnie Paloger is one of many collectors who find this set fascinating but Paloger's set is head and shoulders above the rest. In the following article, we take a deeper look into this classic non-sports set and the quality of Paloger's amazing collection. More...

Donald E. Spence - The Lone Star Collection - The Number One Current Finest Willie Mays Basic Set
One of the beautiful things about collecting Willie Mays cards is the fact that he had such a long career, spanning from the 1951 Bowman rookie card all the way to the 1973 Topps finale. In addition to his rookie card, there are so many important Mays cards to choose from, 27 in all. His 1953 Topps card has often been considered a classic while his 1966 Topps #1 card plays leadoff man to a great set. This award-winning set averages above a PSA Mint 9 across the board with a superb 9.17 set rating. Click here to view.

PSA Q & A

Question: Sometimes, I have a hard time deciding which rookie card to buy of a particular player like Reggie Jackson. Which one should I buy?

Answer: In some cases, a player was pictured on more than one rookie card. Now, of course, today this is very common. Some athletes have dozens of so-called rookie cards these days but that wasn't the case years ago. In many cases, a player had one or only a handful of rookie cards. In cases where they had more than one rookie issue to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one is best. Let's take Reggie Jackson as an example. Reggie was featured on two very popular cards in 1969: his regular Topps card and the Topps Super card. The Topps Super card is very desirable but most people prefer mainstream rookies and, in this case, that rule applies to the Reggie rookie dilemma. The general rule, in cases where there may be more than one rookie, is that the more popular or mainstream issues tend to get the nod over regional, test or less collectible manufactured sets. If in doubt, the mainstream rookies are usually your best bet.
