Taking
My Hacks: In Defense of Quality Auctioneers
Over the last several years, a small group of quality auctioneers have emerged in
the hobby. These auctioneers will often times offer over a thousand lots per auction.
Once in a while, these auctions may make a mistake whether the mistake comes in
the form of an error in the auction write-up or offering an item that turns out
to not be authentic. We all have to remember that auctioneers, just as we are, are
human. In the following piece, Joe Orlando discusses the importance of keeping auction
errors in perspective.

PSA Q & A
Question: Why is it that some publications
do not classify certain cards as rookie cards even though those cards were released
prior or during the same year as the cards they do actually classify as rookie cards?
Answer: This is a very interesting topic. There
are certain cards, especially in the 1980s, that were amongst the first major issues
to feature a player yet some hobby publications classify them as something other
than a rookie card. In our opinion, this is complete nonsense. For example, a 1982
Topps Traded Cal Ripken, Jr. card is a rookie card because the hobby, the collectors
who buy the product, believe it is and prove it with their wallets. The same can
be said of the 1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens and the 1986 Donruss Rookies Barry
Bonds. These cards, as well as other key 1980s issues, have often been labeled as
something other than a true rookie card. The only thing that really matters is how
the hobby perceives the issues and the overwhelming majority of hobbyists consider
all three of the above-mentioned cards amongst the most desirable true rookie cards
of each player - no matter what some publications label them as.
