PSA Q & A

Question: I noticed a few pictures of Ty Cobb holding bats with some type of dark tape along the handle. Was this tape like black electrical tape?

Answer: No. The tape was a light-colored grip tape that darkened over time. Dirt, tobacco juice and general usage all contribute to the darkening of the taped handle. So, what appears to be brown or black tape in the photos was, at one time, white but it became soiled from game use over time. While it is true that some players did use tape, from time to time, that resembled black electrical tape, the vast majority of Ty Cobb taped gamers were prepared with white grip tape.
