PSA SET REVIEW

The Beginning of the Update Set Frenzy: The Story of the 1984 Fleer Update Baseball Set
When the 1984 Fleer Update Baseball set was released, it was Doc Gooden's rookie that most collectors coveted. Today, its biggest asset is the inaugural Roger Clemens card. But either way, this set's relative scarcity and centering flaws -- plus its susceptibility to damage and counterfeiting -- have made 1984 Fleer Update Baseball a tough one to complete in high-grade. PSA Q & A

Question: Are mainstream cards always in more demand than regional cards?

Answer: Generally speaking, more collectors seem to be interested in mainstream cards than regional issues. This is partly due to the fact that collectors remember opening packs of Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, Bowman and other mainstream issues during their youth. On the other hand, with vintage issues, it does tend to vary because some collectors are attracted to the regional card rarity. For example, in 1954, the most desirable cards featuring Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle are from regional sets. While Williams has great cards in the 1954 Bowman and Topps sets, his best card from that year is his Wilson Franks card. With Mantle, his Bowman issue is a great one but, in terms of market value, his Dan Dee card is superior. So, in the end, there are some vintage regional issues that trump more mainstream issues but, in the modern era, it is pretty clear that most collectors prefer mainstream cards since rarity isn't as much of a factor.
