Memory Lane Inc. Offers a Hobby Record-Breaking Number of Important High-End Graded Cards and Sets in Upcoming August 10th Auction
Memory Lane's August Auction offers a huge selection of high-end graded cards -- over 1,000 cards and sets! Included in this enormous sale are pre-1900 and WW1 vintage cards, T-3 Turkey Reds, key offerings from the 1930s and '40s, plus a wide selection of 1950s cards and sets. Rounding out the sale is a selection of rare autographed checks and a Memory Lane first -- vintage Type 1 photographs, authenticated by PSA/DNA. But the star of the sale is a 1963 Mickey Mantle bat exhibiting evidence of heavy game use. Click here to read more.

PSA SET REVIEW

A Look at the 1977 Topps Baseball Set
The 1977 Topps set gets no respect. As it's plagued by poor paper stock, print flaws and centering problems, and has few star cards, it's not hard to understand why. But problem-free '77 cards can be gorgeous, and the '77 Topps -- the Rodney Dangerfield of '70s sets -- has inspired respect in a few diehard collectors. Click here to read on.

PSA EDITORIAL

The "Put Down" Game
Whether it's one dealer bashing another, one collector criticizing a fellow collector or either of the above talking trash about someone else's collectibles, this is all part of the "put down" game. It's an unfortunate aspect of the hobby, one that PSA President Joe Orlando can do without. Read his thoughts on the matter here.

PSA SET REGISTRY SM SPOTLIGHT

Boomers Cards - The Number One Current Finest Ultimate PSA Sampler Vintage Baseball Set
For three years in a row, Boomer has held on to the top spot in this category, receiving the "Best of the Registry" award. This set contains some tough key cards including early tobacco cards and mid-century regional cards. Boomer's set is 100% complete and has a 7.33 GPA, very respectable considering the difficulty of this set. Incidentally, Boomer also was the recipient of the 2006 "Best Oddball Set of the Year" for his 1956 Topps Pins baseball set. Congratulations! Click here to view.

New PSA/DNA Autograph Registry!
The Autograph Registry, which launched today, is a place where collectors can compete in a variety of categories, from sports to historical to entertainment autographs. We have launched the registry with several categories to give collectors some guidance, and hopefully, it will help collectors create their own autograph set category themes. Everything from Presidents to Moonwalkers to Rock and Roll Legends can be collected, in addition to all of the traditional and non-traditional sports autograph themes that collectors are familiar with. This will give autograph collectors the same opportunity as trading cards collectors have to be recognized and compete with the best in the world. Click here to view the Autograph Registry.

New Mega-Sets Category
You may have noticed a new category in the Registry for Mega-Sets. In the coming weeks, we will be adding set composites for collections such as Play Ball, Goudey and Bowman baseball runs, Bowman and Philadelphia football runs, Tall Boy basketball sets, and Parkhurst hockey runs. These challenging sets are designed for those who are building collections by theme.

PSA Set Registry Luncheon
We are anticipating a big turnout next week for the Set Registry luncheon. We look forward to seeing everyone next Friday in Anaheim!

PSA Q & A

Question: I am an active PSA Set Registry member and noticed that you recently added the category of mega-sets. What is a mega-set?

Answer: Great question. Recently, we decided to create this new category on the registry. A mega-set can be many things. For example, a mega-set might be one of the following:

  1. The Big Three - The T206, 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps baseball sets.
  2. Bowman Baseball Run - 1948-1955 Bowman Baseball.
  3. 1948 Bowman Year Set - Baseball, Football and Basketball.
  4. Topps Tall Boy Run - 1964 Topps Hockey, 1965 Topps Football and 1969 Topps Basketball.

These are all mere examples of what a mega-set can be.

What the mega-set category offers is a chance for a collector, who may never lead in one particular category, to be recognized for a major accomplishment. For example, some collectors focus so much on one particular set (1952 Topps for example) that it may be difficult to match them but this allows someone to still be recognized for his 1952 Topps set if he or she tackles The Big Three.

This category also provides ideas and goals to collectors who are looking for direction. In addition, the mega-set formula functions much like the regular registry but each set within the mega-set is weighted so the participant receives more credit where credit is due. For example, in The Big Three, T206 is weighted a "5" while 1952 Topps is weighted a "2" simply because you could, most likely, purchase a 1952 Topps set for about 40% of a complete T206 set in a similar grade.

We think this will be a very fun category so please look for dozens of new mega-set categories in the following weeks.
