PSA Q & A
Question:
What factors affect value on signed, cancelled checks?
Answer:
Great question. The strength of the autograph is always a key. Is it bold? Does the cancellation mark intrude on the autograph? These are a couple of key questions to ask. In addition, is the entire check filled out in the signer's hand? For example, some Babe Ruth checks are filled out entirely in his hand and some are filled out by secretaries. The examples filled out entirely in his hand are considered more appealing. Does the check have the signer's name or info printed on it? Some checks will have "Babe Ruth" printed on the check while others are blank. The checks that exhibit the printed name are considered more desirable -- if they exist. Most checks have some "flaw" such a punch holes, creases (from the fold) or corner tears due to the way they were handled at the bank. As long as the overall eye-appeal is solid, the value will be unaffected -- barring serious flaws.
