PSA SET REVIEW

1933 Goudey R319: A Closer Look at One of the Hobby's "Big-Three"
Some of the most significant events of the 20th century took place in 1933: Hitler became the German Chancellor, FDR became President, Prohibition was ended and -- most significantly for card collectors -- the Goudey Gum Company produced a 240-card baseball series. More than seventy years later, this set still stands as a benchmark to which all subsequent gum card issues are compared. Click here to read on.

PSA SET REGISTRY SM SPOTLIGHT

Short Print Nightmare - The Number One Current Finest 1952 Bowman Large Set
Maintaining the #1 position in 2004 and 2005, collector David Kjeer was given the top award in 2006 for Best Vintage Football Set of the Year (pre-1960). Aptly naming his set "Short Print Nightmare," David is well aware of the difficulty of this set due to the large number of short prints and condition obstacles. At the award deadline on May 31st, this set had a 7.616 GPA. Today, it sits at 7.71, which shows that this collector continues to strive for perfection. Congratulations! Click here to view.

New PSA/DNA Autograph Registry!
The Autograph Registry is a place where collectors can compete in a variety of categories, from sports to historical to entertainment autographs. We have launched the registry with several categories to give collectors some guidance, and hopefully, it will help collectors create their own autograph set category themes. Everything from Presidents to Moonwalkers to Rock and Roll Legends can be collected, in addition to all of the traditional and non-traditional sports autograph themes that collectors are familiar with. This will give autograph collectors the same opportunity as trading card collectors have to be recognized and compete with the best in the world. Click here to view the Autograph Registry.

New Mega-Sets Category
You may have noticed a new category in the Registry for Mega-Sets. In the coming weeks, we will be adding set composites for collections such as Play Ball, Goudey and Bowman baseball runs, Bowman and Philadelphia football runs, Tall Boy basketball sets, and Parkhurst hockey runs. These challenging sets are designed for those who are building collections by theme.

PSA Q & A

Question: What does the term "skinning" mean in the hobby?

Answer: Skinning is a term used to describe a type of card alteration. Usually, you hear this term used when the topic of T206's (most notably Honus Wagners) comes up. A person will take the top layer from one reprint or counterfeit card - the front - and affix it to a real example. You will sometimes see this with Honus Wagner reprints. The front of the reprint is placed on the front of what used to be a common player card. Since the backs of the cards only have the brand listed, this front is more or less interchangeable. This is not always the case but the more common backs are. The person will then attempt to pass off the "combined" card as the real thing and rough up the face to make the card appear older than it really is, to make it blend with the back. The back may be real but the front certainly isn't - making this type of creation a forgery.
