PSA SET REVIEW

Rookie Card Paradise: A Breakdown of the 1954 Topps Baseball Set
In 1954, Topps and Bowman waged a legal battle over which players would appear in which company's card set. There were many players Topps couldn't use, including Mickey Mantle. Topps filled in the set by including great rookie cards like Mays and Kaline, and one big, Mantle-sized star: Ted Williams Click here to read all about it.

Dying a Slow Death
Innovations in manufacturing, grading, and other areas have changed the sportscard collecting hobby forever. One area that has not changed is the trade show, which has been dying a slow death for years. In this article, PSA President Joe Orlando explains why. Click here to read on.

Set Registry Luncheon Planned in July
This year's PSA Set RegistrySM luncheon will be held on Friday, July 29, 2005 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, during the National Sports Collectible Show. Formal invitations to this event will be emailed to all Set Registry members at the end of May. We look forward to seeing old friends and new members this July.

New Deadline Announcement for 2006 Awards
As in previous years, the deadline for the 2005 PSA Set RegistrySM awards is October 31, 2005. However, beginning in 2006, the awards deadline will be moved up to May 31st. This will allow us to recognize the winners with their awards at the summer PSA Set RegistrySM luncheons. This move will give you a shorter window the first year in which to update your sets, but will fall back to the 12 month period in 2007. Click here to learn more about the PSA Set RegistrySM Awards.

Important Notice Regarding Missing Spec Numbers
If you attempt to add a card to your set that does not have a spec number associated with it, you will get an error message. You should email [email protected] with the certification number of the card. Note that it is NOT necessary to send a scan of the card. The spec numbers are PSA's internal numbering system. A spec number error message does not mean that the card is not in the database. It merely means that we need to add the spec number to the Set Registry. There will be a high incident of missing spec numbers in modern sets, player sets, and HOF sets.

Fun, informative, and sometimes controversial, the PSA Set RegistrySM Messageboard is the place to get involved with other collectors who are currently participating in the Set Registry program or are just beginning. Click here to chat on the Set Registry Messageboard.

The PSA Set RegistrySM is a work in progress and we invite your comments and ideas. Send your suggestions to [email protected].

PSA Q & A

Question: Why is there such a noticeable jump in value from cards that grade a PSA VG-EX 4 to a PSA EX 5?

Answer: Generally speaking, a VG-EX card is one that may either exhibit noticeable creasing or heavily worn corners. While the grade represents a mere point in numerical difference, the average eye-appeal possessed by an EX card is considered stronger on the whole due to the usual lack of noticeable creasing on the front of the card. Many collectors are comfortable collecting cards that exhibit corner wear but may have issues with creasing, especially if the crease affects the image in some way. While there are plenty of VG-EX cards that may not exhibit creasing, many VG-EX cards do.
