PSA Q & A

Question: How does provenance influence the authentication of autographs?

Answer: It doesn't. This is often one of the most misunderstood aspects of authentication. Provenance can have an impact, sometimes a major one, on the value of an autograph but it does not influence the authentication process. When an expert analyzes an autograph, the autograph must pass on its own merit. Too often, people rely upon "stories," especially ones that cannot be substantiated by a credible, disinterested source. There are legitimate stories but ANYONE can invent a story. Keep this in mind; if an autograph cannot pass authentication on its own merit, then there usually is a problem ahead.
