Nevertheless, there's no disputing that "The Line" was one of the best. In this article, David Laurell explores the career and the cards of this Detroit Tiger institution. Click here to read on.

PSA Q & A
Question:
How important are numbers on knobs when looking at game-used bats?
Answer:
Great question: It depends on the player and the era. There are many cases where a number on a knob adds value to a bat, especially when the number is unique in some way. For example, Ted Williams game-used bats will sometimes exhibit a black painted "9" on the knob -- it had a very unique look. This type of characteristic can place the bat into the hands of the player and add some real value. Other times, numbers are not as important. For example, Mickey Mantle was very inconsistent with applying his number to the knobs of his bats -- even Willie Mays was inconsistent with this. Early on, Mays bats are rarely seen with a number but his bats from later in his career tend to have "24" on the knob. There's a lot of research that needs to be done but the research is worth it -- become familiar with player characteristics.
