PSA MARKET REPORT

Market News: MastroNet and Lelands.com Set New Auction Records; PSA Grades its First Gem Mint 10 Reggie Jackson Rookie Card
MastroNet's $10.2 million December sale, featuring the infamous Bartman foul ball and Emmitt Smith's record breaking football, smashed the all-time auction record. "Atlantic City Honus Wagner Card" sells for $63,939 at biggest auction in Lelands.com history. And it took 12 years, but the first PSA Gem Mint 10 Reggie Jackson rookie has been graded! Click here to read all about it.

PSA EXPERT'S CORNER

Whack Jobs
"Trimming" is a naughty word in the world of card collecting, and for good reason. The last thing a collector wants is a doctored card. But spotting whack jobs isn't always easy -- many trimmed cards look genuine and some genuine cards look trimmed. In this article, PSA President Joe Orlando provides some tips for avoiding the doctored ones. Click here to read on.

PSA SPORTS TRIVIA

Where Have You Gone, Rafael Palmeiro?
Off-season trades and free-agent signings have left last year's rosters scattered to the winds. See if you can place these eleven major league stars with their new teams. Where is Javy Lopez playing in 2004? How about Todd Walker? David Wells? Gary Sheffield? Click here to test your knowledge.

PSA Q & A

Question: I heard that PSA is going to be grading single signed baseballs soon. I am really excited about it but I had one question. Does it matter if the ball is signed on the sweet spot versus the side panel?

Answer: Great question: To PSA -- no. Since we are focusing 100% on the condition of the piece, we are not going to factor the location of the autograph in the grading unless the eye-appeal becomes a major issue. It is true that many people prefer sweet spot versus side panel autographs but that is for the market to decide. It may affect the value but not the grade.

COLLECTORS SURVEY

The Year 2004 is only three weeks old and it's already been filled with surprises. Which sports event or series of events, in your opinion, is the biggest shocker of the New Year?

  1. Oklahoma/LSU! The mighty Sooners were made to look mediocre by the powerful Bayou Bengals defense.
  2. Vladimir Guerrero! Just when the Orioles seemed to have him locked up the Angels stole him away.
  3. Connecticut/Duke! The Connecticut women's team was supposed to be invincible, but they blew a 20-point lead at home and lost to Duke.
  4. The Los Angeles Lakers! The team is overloaded with superstars but suddenly can't seem to win a game. Injuries have hurt, of course.
  5. Pete Rose! We supported him, we believed him... now we get to forgive him.

Click here to answer. Results will be posted in the next Insider.

Results from last survey: Landslide! An overwhelming 81% of respondents said that the biggest sports story of 2003 was the Florida Marlins' coming out of nowhere to win the World Series. Click here for a complete breakdown.
