PSA MARKET REPORT

Boxing Buffoons
Chewed ears, bad decisions and rankings that have more to do with politics than with ability have marred boxing's good name, claims PSA President and boxing fan Joe Orlando. Read his thoughts on the state of modern boxing and of the sport's collectibles market. Click here to read on.

PSA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Warren Spahn -- The Winningest Lefty in History Dies at Age 82
Spahn won 363 games, the most by any southpaw. He was the subject of one of baseball's most famous poems. Spahn and Juan Marichal pitched a 16-inning 1-0 classic! Spahn pitched two no-hitters, the first when he was 39 years old. A Hall of Fame choice (of course) in 1973. Click here to read more.

PSA EXPERT'S CORNER

Collectors Are Quick to Forgive Certain Celebrities
Kobe Bryant, Maurice Clarett, LeBron James... the list of athletes involved in legal controversy is a long one. But that probably won't stop autograph collectors from seeking their signatures. In this article, autograph columnist Chuck Kaufman provides some commentary about the pitfalls of athletic hero worship, while pointing out a few stars whose collectibility is on the rise. PSA Q & A

Question: Since discs or rounded corner cards like 1969 Topps Supers or Crane Discs have no real corners, what do the graders look for mainly?

Answer: Good question. Centering is the biggest issue on the front and back (to a lesser degree). Print and edge wear are also factors. Even though these issues do not have pointed corners, they can still have damage to the edges and surface wrinkles.

COLLECTORS SURVEY

Baseball's free-agent market is overloaded with talent this year and the bidding is going to be hot and heavy for the top players. If you owned a contender that perennially comes up short and needs one more superstar (say, like Boston) which one of these players would you want the most?

  1. Greg Maddux! Put another 15 or 16 games in the win column as Maddux earns his 300th career win.
  2. Vladimir Guerrero! He'll be expensive, but what a player. He was hurt last year and still posted impressive numbers.
  3. Kevin Millwood! The Phillies don't want to give him a five-year deal. Are they nuts?
  4. Gary Sheffield! He wants $36 million for three years. Is this a problem?
  5. Ivan Rodriguez! The Marlins stole him last year but only signed him for one year. Now he's a HUGE prize in the free-agent pool.

Results from last survey: Another slam dunk for Michael Jordan, as 60% voted him the best basketball player of all time. Click here for a complete breakdown.
