PSA MARKET REPORT

Auction Action
Major auctions at Superior Sports, Madec, and Hunt have recently closed and we have the results. "Sure things" continue to bring big money and so do key cards for PSA Set Registry sets. Many dream cards and true rarities are performing even better than expected, but a few items aren't as hot as you might think. Grey Flannel and American Memorabilia are gearing up for November and December auctions.

PSA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Johnny Unitas: A Football Great Remembered
A football icon passed away this September: the legendary quarterback with the "Golden Arm," Johnny Unitas. Unitas's skill and courage on the gridiron captivated America, making pro football the country's most popular sport and Unitas its most recognizable player. Cards featuring Johnny "U" have always been intensely popular with collectors, but collecting Unitas cards can be frustrating because they are marked by condition rarity. This article remembers the career and the cards of this legendary player.

PSA SPORTS HISTORY

Playoff Time! Will the 2002 Version Possibly Match the Bizarre Events of 1969?
The first inter-league baseball playoffs were in 1969. The "Miracle Mets" needed a miracle to defeat the mighty Orioles. Controversy swirled around game three, game four and game five. Seaver, Koosman and Nolan Ryan starred for the Mets' pitching staff. "It's magic, you know."

OUR READERS ASK

Question: I heard that PSA has a "10" grade. Does that mean the card has to be perfect?

Answer: Good question. The answer is no. A PSA Gem Mint 10 does not need to be perfect but it does need to meet the qualifications for a "10" (please refer to our grading standards page for more information). Keep in mind that all cards have some flaw, whether it is to the naked eye or under high-powered magnification. The key to the grading process is to know what is acceptable in the marketplace for that particular grade. That is what makes a grader competent. Spotting a flaw is only part of the skill, making the call is the other part.

COLLECTORS SURVEY

Pro football season is in full swing, and fans in certain cities are already talking Super Bowl! Well, who's going to win it all? No one knows more than the readers of the PSA Insider, so the world awaits your answer.

  1. Oakland. The Raiders were the best team last year (maybe) and they're definitely the best for this season. Oakland all the way!
  2. San Diego. That 4-0 start is not a fluke! The Chargers are the team to beat this year!
  3. New England. Can the world champions get a little respect? This is far and away the best team and they'll roll to the title.
  4. Green Bay. The Pack is back and all that jazz! Green Bay all the way with the best quarterback and great strength on both sides of the ball.
  5. Someone else! Miami looks strong, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have a shot, St. Louis may rebound yet, and never count out the Bears!

Results from last survey: It was a close one, but 28% chose Nolan Ryan's seventh no-hitter as the most memorable moment in baseball. Click here for a complete breakdown.
