Ed Wachter (Basketball)
Edward A. “Ed” Wachter (1883-1966) is considered one of the greatest centers of his generation, the 1910s, and won more championships than any other player during his era. Wachter skipped high school and college, taking his skills to the next level and playing professional from 1899-1924. Ed possessed quickness, height and versatility as well as great shooting ability with a potent jump shot and consistent free throw shooting ability. He established the Troy Trojans (of Troy, NY), in 1905, and won five Hudson River and New York State League championships from 1910-1915. Wachter and the Trojans instituted rarely seen tactics such as passing, including the bounce pass, fast-break offense and man-to-man defense, all of which are commonplace in today’s game. Ed Wachter retired as a player in 1924, becoming a head basketball coach in the college ranks, leading, among others, Harvard, Williams and Albany State. Ed Wachter was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961.
