Mark McGwire's home run ball # 70 breaks another record by selling for $3.005 million on January 12, 1999 at the Guernsey's auction in New York. The McGwire ball was previously certified by PSA/DNA Guaranteed Authentic in October, 1998. The company tagged the ball and attached an invisible DNA trace liquid, which according to the Washington Post, "must be the second-most famous DNA stain of 1998." The PSA mark can be read and confirmed with a specially calibrated handheld infrared laser device. The New York Times referred to the PSA/DNA certification mark placed on the #70 ball, and stated: "This, more than the ball's other markings, guarantees its authenticity."
