Just when you thought the market was hot, along comes the Spring 99 Heavy Hitters Sale by Superior Sports Auctions. Personally, I was sure that the market was red hot, but this auction proved me wrong. The market is on fire...a four-alarm fire that is consuming every high-end card in the industry.

Among some of the heavier hitters in this sale were a couple of 1933 Goudey Ruths in 8 (#144 an #181) that realized $21,275 and $19,550, respectively. The Lajoie from that same set, also in an 8, fetched a whopping $64,515. A T206 Cobb, red portrait (the most common of his four cards in this set) realized $15,985 in 8, nearly doubling the previous record high.

Some of the highlights in post war baseball material were: A 1948 Leaf DiMaggio in 8 that sold for $20,815, just about the same price that a 9 realized less than a year ago. The super tough 1954 Bowman Ted Williams card, in 8, brought $8,625. Despite his record falling last season, Maris' rookie card in 9 realized over $4,700.

Clemente cards continued to realized strong numbers in mint state, and appear to be distancing themselves from cards of Mays and Aarons, which once sold at the same levels. Watch out Mantle, because Clemente is not too far behind! Take a look at these astonishing prices for mint 9s: 1962 Topps, $5,520; 1964 Topps, $2,760; 1970 Topps, $5,290; 1971 Topps, $4,945.

Three Sandy Koufax 10s appeared in this auction and all did exceedingly well. A 1961 Topps realized $4,600, the 1956 Topps brought $7,130, and the 1958 Topps fetched $11,500.

Among the key football issues was a 1957 Topps Unitas in 9 that brought $5,290. A large lot of 1952 Bowman Large cards were also included in the auction, with key sales including: Otto Graham (9), $3,450; Frank Gifford (8), $3,450; Bob Miller (8), $2,242; John Lee Hancock (8), $2,070; Charley Connerly (9), $3,450; John Schweder (8), $2,185; and Jim Lansford (8), $5,175.

With all these record highs, it is no wonder Superior Sports Auctions realized their highest amount ever, $1,000,883. What a great time to be involved in this wonderful hobby!
