(Arcadia, California) Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert of Baffert Racing Stables will autograph limited edition jerseys on April 3, 2010, at Santa Anita Park as a fund-raiser for retired thoroughbreds, and each signed jersey immediately will be "tagged" by PSA/DNA Authentication Services with a specially-prepared synthetic DNA ink to prevent possible counterfeiting. The invisible-to-the-naked eye security mark can only be seen when illuminated by a specific laser frequency, and is the same system used by PSA/DNA to combat counterfeiting of game-used Super Bowl footballs.
Baffert will publicly autograph new, limited edition Hall of Fame Championship Achievement sportswear produced by MVP Athletic Apparel of Santa Clarita, California in the Paddock area of Santa Anita from Noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday April 3. Point-of-purchase donations will raise money for Old Friends Equine, a thoroughbred retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Baffert's signatures will be certified genuine with the DNA "tag" by an on-site representative of PSA/DNA of Newport Beach, California, the world's largest sports memorabilia authentication company.
"This is the same signed-in-the-presence certification we do with on-site autographs of well-known athletes and entertainers," said Joe Orlando, President of PSA/DNA, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT). "The DNA ink has an astronomical 1-in-33 trillion chance of being accurately reproduced by counterfeiters. It's the same authentication system used by PSA/DNA for the National Football League the past 12 years to certify footballs used in Super Bowl games."
MVP Athletic Apparel manufactures Hall of Fame sportswear for professional athletes and major sports teams nationally.
"This is the first of our planned fund-raising events to benefit thoroughbred care and bring back the glory days of horse racing," said James Turner, West Coast Regional Director of MVP Athletic Apparel. "When people buy a jersey, a t-shirt or mug, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Old Friends."
The jerseys are printed with the logo of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, and the names of 11 of Baffert's thoroughbred champions and their major victories from 1997 to 2009: Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Silverbulletday, Chilukki, Point Given, War Emblem, Vindication, Indian Blessing, Midnight Lute, Midshipman and Lookin at Lucky.
Another autographed-jersey fund-raising event for Old Friends is being planned for Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby weekend in May.
