Gabe Kapler is no ordinary baseball prospect -- he is the Incredible Hulk in disguise. Actually, Kapler is a body building fanatic that that is built much like a Greek God. And even though his build is nothing like Babe Ruth's, his potential for stardom may be very similar.
The 23-year-old prospect terrorized minor league pitchers by setting a AA Southern League record with 146 RBIs last season. He also took home the league MVP and was named USA Today's Minor League Player of the Year. Add on his .322 average and 28 home runs, it seems that this Detroit Tiger outfielder is well on his way to starring in the major leagues.
Despite his .200 average in 7 games with the Tigers last season, it looks as if management will give the youngster a chance to strut his stuff in 1999. And with the short porch in Motown, he should thrive!
If you are a collector and are interested in his rookie cards, you'll want to keep an eye on these two issues:
1998 Bowman Chrome #125 -- By far his best rookie card. If he hits in '99, this card will be the one to lead in price increase.
1998 Fleer Update #U59 -- What a sleeper! With the J.D. Drew selling at the $150-$200 levels in a PSA10, this card has become a bargain that can be easily purchased for less than $10.
