Washington Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young’s collection of high-grade Hall of Fame players’ rookie cards will be displayed by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) at this summer’s National Sports Collectors Convention. Many cards are graded PSA Gem Mint 10.

“This is one of the greatest runs of post-World War II baseball rookie cards in the hobby. The vast majority of cards are the finest examples known,” said Joe Orlando, PSA President and Editor of Sports Market Report.

“We are honored to display such a remarkable collection, owned by such an outstanding MLB player and collector. Someone like Dmitri Young can have a great impact on current and future collectors by sharing his amazing collection with the hobby, and he’s kind enough to loan it for display at this year’s show. Simply put, it’s a collection that surpasses all superlatives,” said Orlando.

Two-time All-Star player Young collected baseball cards in his youth, and began building this specific set eight years ago with the goal of assembling the finest collection in existence of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame rookie cards from 1948 to 1990. In recent years card collector and dealer Dave Bailey of Detroit has assisted Young in finding cards for the set.

“Growing up I was a big Mets and Braves fan,” Young told Sports Market Report.

“My heroes from the Braves were Dale Murphy and Bob Horner, and from the Mets it was ‘Dr. K’ (Dwight Gooden) and the ‘Straw Man’ (Darryl Strawberry). That’s whose cards I collected as a kid; Murphy, Horner, Gooden, Strawberry, Don Mattingly, Orel Hershiser and Bret Saberhagen. I was like any other kid. I’d get cards and play with them and trade with my friends.”

Highlights of the approximately 150 cards in the collection include: Roy Campanella 1949 Bowman PSA 10; Ernie Banks 1954 Topps PSA 10; Roberto Clemente 1955 Topps PSA 10; Brooks Robinson 1957 Topps PSA 10; Carl Yastrzemski 1960 Topps PSA 10; Lou Brock 1962 Topps PSA 10; Pete Rose 1963 Topps PSA 10; Tom Seaver 1967 Topps PSA 10; Johnny Bench 1968 Topps PSA 10; Reggie Jackson 1969 Topps PSA 10; and George Brett 1975 Topps PSA 10.

Dmitri says he loves his entire collection, but does admit there’s one card that’s his favorite.

“When I think of all the great cards in my collection, the one that stands out the most for me is my Reggie Jackson 1969 Topps that is graded PSA 10. I have a lot of cards of the greatest, most legendary Hall of Famers in the game, but that one is my personal favorite. Getting that card was huge for me,” he explained.

The Dmitri Young rookie card collection will be exhibited at the PSA booth, #521, in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois at the 29th National Sports Collectors Convention, July 30 – August 3, 2008.
