1912 Boston Garter Advertising Card of Christy Mathewson: sold for $31,625

Countless auction records fell on May 1, 2004 as Robert Edward Auctions held one of the largest and most successful Baseball Card and Memorabilia auctions in collecting history. A total of 873 lots generated an astounding $4.5 million dollars in sales, averaging over $5,000 per lot, with total prices realized soaring to over 50% above the high-end estimate of the sale. Over 2500 participants including bidders from all over the world including Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong, helped to propel prices to unprecedented record levels.

The auction was highlighted by an extraordinary collection of documents and other materials relating to "The Origins of Baseball," which alone realized a total in excess of $500,000. The auction was presented on Robert Edward Auctions' Internet site and also simultaneously presented on eBay to ensure maximum exposure. Between Robert Edward Auctions' catalog, web site, and eBay, a total of over 160,000 different collectors viewed the auction catalog. This represents a record circulation for any baseball or collectibles auction of any type, and ensured that every item was sold to the person or institution that was willing to pay the most.

The 873 lots were won by an incredible 383 different bidders, representing a record low number of winners to number of lots ratio for Robert Edward Auctions, a statistic effectively illustrating the power of the marketing and auction process, and the breadth of bidder interest. By any measure this was one of the most carefully assembled, important, and successful baseball card and memorabilia auctions in the history of collecting.

Some of the many significant highlights include:
