1997 Ichiro Suzuki Orix Blue Wave Game-Used Jersey brings $14,920 in MastroNet auction

Mickey Mantle continues to make headlines long after his retirement from baseball. During another major auction, Mantle stole the headlines as his 1955 game-used All-Star bat sold for $39,708, making it one of the highest prices realized ever for a Mantle gamer. After all the bidding stopped, MastroNet's latest premier catalogue auction finished with nearly $3,000,000 in total bids. The exact total was $2,949,807, a result of strong bidding in a number of different areas. Mid-grade PSA cards performed very well along with quality team signed baseballs. Game-used bats, which have been surging in recent months, did not disappoint.

Sportico Sets Records From August 16, 2001 Internet & Phone Auction

Sportico's Internet & Phone Auction, which ended on August 16, 2001, went off with a bang! Over $132,000 in total sales were produced with many record prices being set on individual items. "The auction was a great success; our clients and consignors where both very pleased with the results and everything ran smoothly. We look forward to our next auction on November 29, 2001," said Ryan Friedman, Chairman and CEO of Sportico. All in all, the auction sold over 90% of the items and exceeded Sportico's First Auction Gross Sales back in March by over 40%. "We are glad to see our auctions grow in the number of items we offer, and with the total gross sales. Across the board the numbers are all up from the previous auction and we are looking at expanding even more for the November 29 auction."

Sportico also became the first Internet & Phone Auction for sports memorabilia and sports cards to distribute a full interactive mini CD-ROM to clients. Sportico handed out these mini CD's to clients at SportsFest Chicago. "This was an extremely exciting time for Sportico. We like to be on the cutting edge when it comes to giving our clients more ways to view and participate in our auctions. Being the first company to distribute a fully interactive flash auction catalog on a mini CD is just another great way that Sportico allows clients to participate," said Friedman.

"We already have 100's of items on consignment for November and we believe our clients and future clients will be impressed," said Friedman.

Bonds Still Ahead of Pace, Sosa Not Far Behind

In case you haven't noticed, Barry Bonds is still crushing the ball and now has 58 home runs on the season. Currently, Bonds is slightly ahead of the pace set by Mark McGwire in 1998, a season in which "Big Mac" reached the unthinkable number of 70. Despite being ahead of Mac's pace in the homer run race, the reality is that Bonds still needs 12 more homers to simply tie McGwire's mark and 13 to break it with only about two dozen games left. So, in turn, Bonds has to basically hit a home run every other game to do it, a formidable task all by itself.

On another note, out of nowhere, Sammy Sosa has entered the race again by having a torrid month at the plate in August. Sosa also reached the 50 home run plateau for the fourth consecutive year during this barrage of bombs, a tremendous feat. Sosa, now with 53 homers on the season, may not have a realistic chance at 70 but he certainly has a chance of catching Bonds if Bonds goes cold at the plate and Sammy can continue his hot streak.

Who knows if either slugger will come close to 70 but one thing is certain, with both of their respective teams still in the playoff hunt, I can't imagine these guys will see too many good pitches to hit down the stretch. The pennant races have not been this exciting in a long time.

Would you want to pitch to these guys with the season on the line?

    I think not.
