Superior Sports Auctions “The Boys of Summer” sale left many old price records in the dust on June 29, 2000 as bidder interest for top quality sportscards and memorabilia refused to wilt in the summer heat. The 1,131-lot sale grossed over $1.279 million, with top-quality PSA-graded “commons” performing extremely well while classic rarities and “star” cards continued to shine.

“Whether you were a set builder or just wanted a key card to add to your collection, this auction had it all,” said Chris Porter, Director of Auctions at Superior Sports. “The key star cards in high grade always generate a lot of interest [and] low population commons from key sets continue to do phenomenally well. The 1933 Goudey George Connally had a minimum bid of $570, but it soared to $13,800. The 1952 Topps Harry ‘Suitcase’ Simpson realized an astonishing $8,913.”

The 1968 Topps baseball set seemed to be “on fire” throughout the auction, according to Porter. “This auction contained many high-grade lots featuring cards from the 1968 Topps baseball set and the response from bidders definitely exceeded expectations,” explained Porter. “The high-end stars broke price records and high-end commons brought great numbers. Overall, all of the lots that featured cards from this set did extremely well.”
