NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. -- A 1934 Goudey Jimmy Foxx #1 baseball card, graded near mint 8 by PSA, topped the Collectors Universe Superior Sports (NASDAQ: CLCT) spring auction Thursday night, with a final hammer price of $31,050, more than triple the Sportscard Market Report's (SMR) current listing at $10,000. A 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie basketball card in PSA Gem Mint 10, realized $29,900 ($26,500 SMR). Vintage baseball cards and sets performed very well in the auction, including a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #181 in PSA 8, which realized $30,475 ($22,000 SMR); a 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax #123 in PSA 9 realized $24,265 ($9,750 SMR); and a set of 152, 1954 Topps baseball cards, which included PSA 7, 8, and 9 graded cards, went for $22,425.

"The market for vintage, high grade cards continues to roll forward at a sizzling pace. We're gratified by the number of both new and experienced collectors showing pronounced confidence in both Superior and PSA," remarked Chris Porter, Superior's Director of Auctions.

Other baseball highlights included, Yankee pitcher Bob Grim's 1956 World Series ring which realized $10,350; a 1927 World Champion New York Yankees team signed baseball earned $16,251; a gem mint Hartland statue of Eddie Mathews in its original box realized $5,405; a 1965 Topps Ernie Banks #510 realized $13,241 ($1,500 SMR estimate); and a 1951 Bowman Willie Mays #305 realized $10,350 ($7,000 SMR).

Vintage football cards had a strong showing, including a 1935 National Chicle #34 Bronko Nagurski in PSA 8, realized $24,495 ($15,000 SMR); a 1935 National Chicle Bernie Masterson #36 football card in PSA 8, which achieved $13,225 ($7,000 SMR); a complete 1965 Topps football card set realized $6,038; and a 1950 Bowman Otto Graham in PSA 9 earned $4,600 ($2,750 SMR). Other notable results for 1935 National Chicle football cards, all graded PSA 8, currently listed between $700-$1,000 in the SMR were: Dutch Clark ($4,888, $2,000 in current SMR), Beattie Feathers #23 ($1,840), Dale Burnett #25 ($4,888), John Isola #26 ($4,025, and a PSA 7 example earned $776), Bull Tosi #27 ($2,645), Chester Johnson #32 ($3,738), and a PSA 9 example of a Cliff Montgomery #21 realized $3,738 (SMR - $1,500). Two 1933 Goudey Sport Kings cards were also notable: Knute Rockne #35 ($4,888) and Jim Thorpe #6 ($4,313).

Various 1955 Topps All-American football cards also achieved notable results, including a Jim Thorpe #37 in PSA 9, $3,738 ($1,700 SMR) and earned $1,208 ($770 SMR) in PSA 8; The Four Horseman in PSA 9, realized $3,738 ($3,000 SMR); a Steve Dowden #40, realized $1,581 ($670 SMR); a Don Hutson #97, realized $1,840 ($800 SMR); and a Red Grange #27 in PSA 9 earned $2,070 ($1,175 SMR). A spectacular Gem Mint 10 1984 Topps John Elway rookie card realized $6,900 ($1,950 SMR); a 1963 Topps Jim Brown #14 realized $3,680 ($750 SMR), and a 1948 Bowman Charley Conerly #12 in PSA 9 earned $1,324 ($300 SMR).

Other notable baseball results included several cards in PSA mint 9: 1961 Topps Mickey Mantle #300 ($8,395), 1962 Topps Roger Maris #1 ($12,075), 1962 Topps Ernie Banks #25 ($3,466), 1957 Topps Ernie Banks #55 ($4,025), 1959 Fleer Ted Williams signs for 1959 ($4,025), 1960 Topps Sandy Koufax, #343 ($2,070), 1957 Topps Al Kaline #125 ($2,760), 1954 Topps Yogi Berra ($4,658), 1957 Topps Yogi Berra ($3,738), 1952 Bowman #43 Bob Feller ($2,530), 1953 Topps Warren Spahn #147 ($6,354), 1949 Bowman Warren Spahn #33 ($2,991), 1935 Diamond Stars Charlie Gehringer #77 ($3,220), 1933 Goudey #56 Charlie Ruffing #56 ($4,428), and a 1932 U.S. Caramel Bill Dickey #6 ($6,900).
